My child is entering high school. I am very concerned about how my child will transition from high school to adulthood. I heard that my child is entitled to transition planning services. What are they?

The goal of Transition Planning is to help a student finish high school and successfully transition to college, vocational education, work and/or independent living skills. Beginning when your child turns 15, their IEP should include Transition Planning goals, services and a coordinated set of activities to meet those goals. IEP annual review meetings throughout the high school years include discussions of how to make that transition successful. Many parents of private school students are not aware that they are entitled to the same kind of deliberate and mindful conversations with regard to future plans for their children.
