It’s a Good Friday

The WaPo reports Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who is second in the Church hierarchy only to the Pope, is set to release a letter to the chief rabbi of Israel clarifying the “Good Friday” liturgy. It is nice the Catholic Church is not condoning missionary activity and believes salvation remains in G-d’s hands, but we are somewhat mystified (as we have written before) by reports that Jews and rabbis around the world pressed for this change.

It seems a “cardinal” rule of interfaith dialogue is that neither side has the right to tell the other what it is that the other does, can or should believe nor can it insist on a change in action (barring violence or murder). Demanding respect and tolerance ought to be a two way street.
