Orthodox Union Applauds Congressman Hoyer’s Support for Israeli Construction in Jerusalem

The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations in America (the Orthodox Union), the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization representing nearly 1,000 synagogues nationwide applauds Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer’s (MD) support for Israeli construction in all areas of Jerusalem.  Congressman Hoyer disagreed with official US policy that rebuked Israel earlier this week for approving more construction in the area known as East Jerusalem.  In an interview with POLITICO, the Congressman, who is currently leading a congressional trip to Israel, stated that Jerusalem is different from settlements.  “Essentially, this is a Jewish neighborhood. It may be in East Jerusalem, but it’s a Jewish neighborhood and it’s expanding.”  Additionally, Rep. Hoyer importantly pointed out that he does not see this as potentially damaging or undermining the greater goal of the peace process in any way.  The Orthodox Union praises Rep. Hoyer on his relevant and important remarks, and ultimately, on his understanding of Israel’s historical connection to Jerusalem.
