Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
I am writing to you today to strongly urge you to support the Senate taking up and passed H.R.6090 - The Antisemitism Awareness Act.
This bill, overwhelmingly passed by the House (and enjoying bipartisan sponsorship in the Senate as S.4127), would require the U.S. Department of Education to utilize the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism when enforcing anti-discrimination laws.
The American Jewish community, and all Americans, have witnessed disgusting displays of institutional antisemitism on college campuses and some K-12 schools across America. Harassment, violence and calls for genocide against Jewish students have become part and parcel of campus culture.
Any university or school that receives taxpayer funding has a legal obligation, under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, to prevent discrimination. Adopting the IHRA definition brings clarity and structure to the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws that an executive order or resolution simply cannot. This not only benefits all students, but gives administrators a foundation for adjudicating disciplinary actions.
As a concerned Jewish American and constituent, I urge you to support this bill and help the Department of Education root out antisemitism wherever it festers.
Sincerely,
