Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
I am writing to you today to strongly urge you to cosponsor HR.8648, the Civil Rights Act of 2024, a bill designed to bring real protections to students on university campuses who may fear having their civil rights violated.
This bill, already reported favorably by the Committee on Education and the Workforce on a bipartisan vote, would require universities to publish and disseminate their policies and procedures for compliance under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act; the policies will need to be posted on the school’s website, and the information will also have to be included in student orientation sessions. HR8648 also requires each university to appoint a designated Title VI coordinator similar to existing Title IX coordinators. These administrators will be a transparent and accountable point of contact for students. Critically, those schools that fail to comply with these requirements for two years will become ineligible to receive federal education funds.
Additionally, HR8648 requires the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights to increase transparency around their investigations to ensure that Congress is kept up to date with their efforts to combat the festering antisemitism on campus.
As a concerned Jewish American and constituent, I ask you to sign on as a cosponsor to HR8648 and help expand its support before it comes to the House of Representatives floor for a vote.
Sincerely,
