I am writing to you as a Maryland resident and concerned member of the Jewish community.
This session there are two important issues impacting Jewish education before the legislature.
The Maryland Department of Legislative Services’ recommendation to cut $2.5 million from the Nonpublic School Health and Security (NSHS) portion of the Aid to Nonpublic Schools program. This program has been instrumental in helping our schools address pressing health and security challenges, ensuring our students are properly protected while they learn. This funding is especially crucial in the face of rising antisemitism and hate crimes in Maryland and across the country.
The Maryland STEM Program (SB673/HB1447), introduced by Senators Hettleman and Attar and Delegate Vogel. Now more than ever, STEM is a critical part of a child's education. This program would make a significant impact on their lives by paying public school Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math teachers to teach STEM subjects in nonpublic schools after their day ends in public school. This addresses the rising costs of STEM education, the growing shortage of qualified STEM teachers in the state and the need to expand STEM education offerings to all students, helping prepare them for the future.
I implore you to act to protect and support ALL Maryland’s students – no matter where they go to school – by maintaining of the Nonpublic School Health and Security (NSHS) nonpublic school allocation and backing this innovative new STEM program.
