Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
I am writing today to ask that you support the Work Opportunities and Resources to Keep Nonprofit Organizations Well (WORK NOW) Act (S. 740 and H.R. 1987) to help nonprofits meet the skyrocketing needs of our communities and help our charitable institutions survive the pandemic by creating a $50 billion grant program to provide emergency relief to eligible nonprofits, especially those whose workers are serving community needs that have increased because of the pandemic.
Charitable nonprofits are essential to our country’s economic and social well-being, providing essential, frontline services to our communities, even as they have suffered severe economic devastation wrought by the coronavirus pandemic: almost a million nonprofit workers have lost their jobs since February 2020, a 7% loss. This stands in stark contrast to the Great Recession, when nonprofit employment increased. Further, the nonprofit sector is the third largest employer in the U.S. economy.
The Orthodox Union Advocacy Center is part of a large network of charitable nonprofits fighting to ensure these essential organizations—including synagogues, day schools, community centers, summer camps and other foundation institutions— are able to retain employees, scale service delivery and provide unemployed people with new jobs that serve their communities.
The WORK NOW Act would also help nonprofits meet the increasing need for charitable assistance due to the coronavirus pandemic amid the twin challenges of dwindling donations and decreases in revenue.
America’s nonprofits are on the front lines of the pandemic, working day in and day out to make sure our communities get the help and sustenance they so desperately need so they may hire more workers, scale their efforts and support the many people who count on them during these times of crisis.
We are grateful that Congress already has passed economic stimulus legislation packages providing critical support to the nonprofit community, and we urge you co-sponsor the WORK NOW Act to further this much-needed assistance.
Sincerely,
