Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a new universal school lunch program for all students.
We applaud Mayor de Blasio's commitment to proper nutrition for all students. Like the Mayor we believe that all students deserve access to nutritious and well balanced meals in order to succeed academically.
Despite our advocacy in City Hall, the new "Free Lunch for All" program is hardly "for all" when it excludes more than 30,000 students in New York City. The Free Lunch for All program is based on the concept that a healthy lunch should be provided to all students- regardless of the school they attend. While "Free Lunch for All" is a catchy name, the reality should match the promise; in its current form, it does not- and in the process, excludes every Jewish and Islamic school in the City. Jewish day school students alone represent the single largest nonpublic school provider in New York City, nearly 8 % of all students enrolled in New York City attend a Jewish Day School, many more students attend other schools and adhere to religious dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, City Hall does not care about these kids, and lets them go hungry.
