Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, joined Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and other leaders at the Department of Education to welcome the introduction of a new federal education proposal to significantly expand education choice nationwide for millions of American families.

The Education Freedom Scholarships and Opportunity Act, unveiled today by Secretary DeVos and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.), would establish a new federal tax credit to support the contributions of individuals and businesses to state scholarship-granting organizations.  (The Orthodox Union, together with its allies in the religious and educational communities, worked closely with Sen. Cruz and Rep. Byrne to shape the legislation.)

Nathan Diament, the Orthodox Union’s executive director for public policy stated:
“We welcome this legislative proposal as an important first step to better empower parents and others to determine the best education for their children. School choice is a priority not only for our community but for all American families.”

Orthodox Union President Mark (Moishe) Bane stated:
“The Orthodox Union is deeply appreciative of Secretary DeVos, Sen. Cruz and Rep. Byrne for putting forth this new policy to expand educational opportunities for our students. We look forward to working with them to empower parents and children through school choice programs across the United States.”
