Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
On Dec. 23, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed resolution 2334, which casts Israel’s building of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as both illegal and an obstacle to Israeli-Palestinian peace. The UN body approved the measure 14-0; the U.S. abstained.
I am writing to you today to urge you to condemn the UNSC’s blatantly anti-Israel resolution by voting in favor of the U.S. resolution being introduced this week that rebukes the Security Council’s action. It has long been U.S. policy that any progress toward an agreement in the region must be based on direct negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
Furthermore, the United Nations has had a long record of anti-Israel bias: During 2016 alone, the UN General Assembly adopted 20 resolutions against Israel and just four against other countries: North Korea, Syria, Iran and Russia. The Security Council’s latest attempt to undermine Israel is no different, except that this time the United States refused to stand by its closest ally in the Middle East against another unjust attack.
Over the course of his presidency, Mr. Obama has repeatedly reassured American Jews and others concerned about Israel’s security and welfare, that his commitment to U.S. support for Israel’s security was “unshakeable.” By allowing the Security Council’s resolution to pass in the last weeks of his Administration, President Obama has undermined his legacy in that regard.
The Orthodox Union and many other pro-Israel organizations have issued statements against the Security Council’s latest attempts to isolate and attack the Jewish state.
We urge you to vote in favor of this important U.S. resolution, which faces the United Nations’ hostility toward Israel head-on and provides a counter-balance to the UN’s unfair action.
Sincerely,
