Since October 7th, the NYPD has recorded a 330% rise in hate crimes in New York, resulting in Jewish day schools having to nearly double security costs, according to a recent study, just to ensure our students can continue to learn in a safe, secure environment. The financial burden on our institutions and community of keeping our children safe is substantial and unsustainable.

I am extremely grateful to you, and the entire Senate body, for doubling the Nonpublic School Safety Equipment Grant Program (NPSE) from $45 million to $90 million. I would also like to thank Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris for successfully leading this effort.

This will dramatically help mitigate the burden on nonpublic schools who are at increased risk hate-crimes during this turbulent time.

Thanks to this additional support, I can send my child to school at ease, without the added stress of a security fee increase on my tuition bill. I urge you to ensure this funding is included in the final budget.
