Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
I am contacting you today to discuss the significant disparity in funding between public and nonpublic school students in New Jersey. I respectfully urge you to support equitable funding for New Jersey's nonpublic school students in the Fiscal Year 2019 budget, specifically for school security funding. I am requesting nonpublic school security funding be at a level of $190 per child, in line with what Governor Murphy has proposed for public school children. The role of the government, first and foremost, must be to provide for the safety and security of ALL its citizens, especially its children.
We all watch with bated breath as news breaks of new tragedies at schools across the country, praying that our kids are safe, and praying that these horrific events cease. Beyond the headline grabbing tragedies, there are more frequent disturbing incidents at schools. Vandalism, bias incidents and unauthorized entries are becoming common at schools across the nation. That is why states across the country have focused on school security.
Unfortunately, New Jersey's investment in student security is not equal. In our state, the current public school security funding is about double the investment in nonpublic schools. This, despite the fact that nonpublic schools, be they Jewish, Islamic, Catholic or secular, are often at a great risk.
Again, I am asking for $190 per child for nonpublic school security in the FY 2019 budget. Please address the significant disparity in how we allocate funding to protect children in our schools.
Thank you in advance for your attention to this critical issue.
Sincerely,
