Today, Senator Joe Lieberman announced he will not seek re-election to the Senate in 2012. He will, no doubt, make important contributions to American politics in his remaining time in the Senate, and contribute much more in whatever he chooses to do next.
For the moment, we – in the Orthodox Jewish community – must pause, consider and appreciate how much he has done for us and as a Kiddush Hashem. Joe Lieberman was the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee as a Shomer Shabbat….with all that implies.
Here is the essay I penned in The Washington Post the day after Al Gore announced his running mate in 2000. American Jewish history – Orthodox Jewish history – has never been the same since. And we have Joe Lieberman to thank.
