The Time is Now for New Jersey to Adopt the IHRA

The federal government is already moving to take a stand by adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. This crucial step sets a clear standard for identifying and combating antisemitism across the country. But while Washington steps up, New Jersey risks falling behind.

The New Jersey State Assembly is currently debating the IHRA bill (A3558) – legislation that would adopt this federal definition, providing our state with a vital tool to combat the growing threat of antisemitism. The bill also includes $100,000 for a public education campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting tolerance.

New Jersey’s Jewish Communities Can’t Afford to Wait

Since October 7, 2023, antisemitism in New Jersey has surged, with hate crimes against the Jewish community doubling year over year. In the face of this alarming reality, our legislators must take swift action. However, some lawmakers are dragging their feet, standing in the way of this critical bill.

New Jersey has long been a leader in protecting its diverse communities, but with the IHRA bill stalled, the state risks abandoning its Jewish population at a moment when they need protection the most.
