Nonpublic Schools Tax Credit Program Spared by Governor in Rhode Island

Recognizing the importance of such programs to empower parents to choose the best education for their children – where constitutionally permissible – we at the Orthodox Union are very pleased to see that Governor Carcieri is continuing the Rhode Island school tax credit program.

The Providence Journal reports – Governor Carcieri is marking what is known as “Catholic School Day” at the State House by promising to revoke a two-day-old budget proposal that threatens a state tax credit that rewards businesses that donate scholarship money to private and parochial schools.

The credit of up to $100,000 per business was adopted by state lawmakers in 2006, at Carcieri’s urging, after an aggressive campaign by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence.
