Obama, Bibi & Abbas; Pre-Meeting Spin Cycle

Posted on September 22, 2009 In Blog

With President Obama, Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas set to meet this morning, the stage-setting, analysis and spin are at full speed.

Politico’s Laura Rozen sets the stage; while Shmuel Rosner and Steve Rosen look at how Obama got into this pickle.

The nefarious Stephen Walt (recently endorsed by Osama bin Laden, and endorser of J Street) urges Obama to press Israel more.

Israel’s President Shimon Peres hopes the meeting will lead to renewed peace talks, while Bush-Clinton alum Aaron Miller low-balls those expectations.

Oddly, our friends at the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism commend President Obama for convening the meeting and say they “stand ready to provide whatever support we can to the Obama Administration as it engages in the intensive and sustained diplomatic efforts necessary to move beyond the untenable status quo.” But Rabbi Saperstein says nothing about whether the Reform Movement is also ready to support Prime Minister Netanyahu and Israel achieve security in the face of those who threaten her citizens and recognition from those who still deny the Jewish State’s legitimacy.
