The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, applauds the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision to uphold kosher meals for Indiana prisoners in the case of Maston Willis v. Commission.

Last year Matson Willis, an Orthodox Jewish inmate at the Miami Correction facility filed a class-action suit against the department of corrections after he had stopped receiving kosher meals. The correction system had stopped providing these meals claiming that kosher meals were too expensive to provide. This caused a major problem for inmates with kosher dietary restrictions.

The Orthodox Union was prepared to file an amicus brief had the department of corrections not ceded.
