OU PRAISES ISRAEL’S HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS IN AFRICA; CONDEMNS TERRORIST ACTS

Today, the Orthodox Union (OU) praised the humanitarian efforts of Israel in response to the tragic terrorist bombings in Africa. By dispatching its specialists to the sites, the Israeli government has sped up the rescue operation and saved lives.

Orthodox Union President Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., issued the following statement:

The Orthodox Union praises the State of Israel for quickly dispatching rescue teams to Africa to expedite the rescue operation at the American embassies that fell victim to the scourge of terrorism last week. We would certainly prefer that Israel did not possess the expertise of how to efficiently conduct a search and rescue operation at a bombing site; no nation should have to develop those skills. However, once again, Israel stands with the United States and all peace-loving and democratic people on the side of freedom and law; against terrorism and violence.

The special relationship between the United States and Israel is expressed not only by political support, but also in moments of tragedy, when saving even one precious human life is a priority. Israel’s swift reaction is also an expression of gratitude to the Kenyan government for having allowed Israeli planes to refuel during the 1976 Entebbe rescue operation.

The Orthodox Union encourages the United States, Israel and the world’s democracies to redouble their collective and cooperative efforts to combat the scourge of terrorism. This must include not only bringing the perpetrators of these bombings to justice, but all criminals who have resorted to this sort of violence and remain unpunished.

We extend our condolences to the families of the victims of these acts. May they receive G-d’s compassion and comfort.
