Silencing the “Silenced”

In an Op-Ed in Sunday’s Boston Globe, Jeff Jacoby responds to John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walts’ claim that their new book, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, would be suppressed, and its authors branded as anti-Semites for claiming that the Israel lobby controlled U.S. policy towards Israel.

This couldn’t be further from the truth, Jacoby writes. The book debuted at number 12 on the NY Times Best Sellers list, and number 6 on the LA Times’ list. Walt and Mearsheimer have had plenty of opportunities to lecture in public forums, and no mainstream media outlet has branded them as bigots, or anti-Semites. Rather, the real reason for the cold response to their book is simply that the American people favor Israel, and that is why the U.S. supports it, and despite the standings on the NY Times Best Sellers list, the American people simply aren’t buying an argument to the contrary.
