Surprises in a new education poll

Gallup’s latest poll on education is out -`and the answers aren’t always what you’d have thought.

Questioned as to whether they support parental choice of a private school “at public expense” 44% said yes, up from 39% last year and 36% the year before. Higher even than the 42% in 2004. Broken down Democrats vs. Republicans, 1 in 3 Democrats favored and over half (54%) of Republicans favored.

But when asked which presidential candidate they trust “to do a better job dealing with the following education issues? Closing the achievement gap between whites and minority students, promoting parental choice, supporting research efforts for developing new curriculum courses and new educational assessment methods, and funding education?” on promoting parental choice McCain trails Obama 32% to 43%, with 25% unsure.
