On Monday, June 27, the New Jersey General Assembly will consider a bill, A925, that prohibits the state from investing pension and annuity funds in companies that boycott Israel or Israeli businesses. With wide bi-partisan support, S1923 passed in the State Senate 39-0. In the Assembly A925 has the bi-partisan sponsorship of more than half of the 80 Assembly Members.
The anti- Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel legislation follows similar anti-BDS laws passed in several other states as well as a ground-breaking executive order earlier this month by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo that prohibits the state from doing business with any entity associated with the BDS movement.
However, the ACLU has taken strong action to oppose the New Jersey legislation, erroneously claiming that it is in violation of First Amendment principles, and that the ensuing tally identifying companies boycotting Israel is a McCarthy-like “blacklist.”
