Representative John Yarmuth (D-KY) recently introduced H.Res.686 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Although this resolution contains some statements with which we agree—such as support for enhanced Israeli security and condemning acts of terrorism against Israelis—its main purpose is to urge the Obama Administration to unilaterally propose substantive provisions for a final agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. It has long been United States policy that progress toward a peaceful solution in the region must come only by Israeli and Palestinian leaders engaging in direct negotiations. Any attempt to bypass direct involvement by both parties will be counterproductive and ultimately fail.
H.Res.686 has been referred to the Subcommittee on Middle East and North Africa in the Foreign Affairs Committee in the United States House of Representatives.
