OU Statement Regarding Statement By Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat

Posted on October 6, 2010 In Press Releases

The division of Jerusalem is “dead on arrival” according to Mayor Nir Barkat, because “there is not one example of a split city that has ever worked.” Speaking at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Barkat was adamant that a divided city “will never fly.”

The Orthodox Union applauds Mayor Barkat for his strong and principled stand.

“The division of Jerusalem would be tragic for the health and vitality of the city,” said Nathan Diament, OU Director of Public Policy. “Jerusalem has become a truly international city since its reunification, and like Mayor Barkat, the OU wants to see a Jerusalem that continues to thrive and remain open to the free practice of religion for all people. Condemning its residents and its future to failure is not an option.”
