Orthodox Union Welcomes Distribution of Lifesaving Radios to Schools
Protecting children and teachers doesn’t stop at the school house door

The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish organization, through its Institute for Public Affairs, welcomes the distribution of lifesaving “NOAA” radios by the Federal government to all schools across the country. Three federal agencies (the Departments of Commerce, Education and Homeland Security) have already distributed such radios – which work to sound alarms in emergencies even when all other communication is out – to each public school in the nation. The OU/IPA has been urging the Federal government to include non-public schools in their distribution as well.

Nathan J. Diament, Director of Public Policy at the OU stated:

“We know that government’s obligation of protecting children and teachers doesn’t stop at the schoolhouse door, even if that school is a nonpublic or religious one. The Orthodox Jewish community is grateful to Secretaries Gutierrez, Spellings, and Chertoff for taking the lead to ensure every child in every school is safe.”
