Predictably, and disappointingly, President Bush has issued his final “national security waiver” and won’t be moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
To be sure, George W. Bush has been an historic supporter of Israel in so many ways. But it is disappointing that he will not fulfill the promise he made when campaigning for the presidency in 2000 that “as soon as I take office, I will begin the process of moving the United States ambassador to the city Israel has chosen as its capital.”
This is especially true now, when more and more voices are heard in political circles calling for the redivision of Jerusalem.
As we just demonstrated at the OU’s biennial convention in Jerusalem, the OU will continue to rally support for keeping Jerusalem “one” and for the next president to do what is right – locate America’s embassy in Jerusalem.
