Washington, D.C. – The Orthodox Union applauds the House of Representatives for passing HR 6297, a 10-year extension of the Iran Sanctions Act. The members of the house extended this critical bill yesterday by an overwhelming majority of 419 to 1.
“The wide margin by which the bill passed underscores the importance of this bill, and shows the members of the House of Representatives are serious about Iran,” said Nathan Diament, the OU’s Executive Director for Public Policy. “By voting to extend the Iran Sanctions Act, the House of Representatives has voted to protect the security of Israel, the United States and the world at large from the potential of a nuclear Iran.”
Before last year’s enactment of the Iran Nuclear Deal, the ISA was the framework for banking, energy, and defense sanctions against Iran, and since then it has served as a precaution if Iran violates the nuclear deal. Extending the Iran Sanctions Act would send a powerful message to Iran that the United States will not tolerate Iranian nuclear proliferation.
The Orthodox Union encourages all members of the Senate to follow the lead of their colleagues in the House and support the reauthorization of the Iran Sanctions Act. Orthodox Union Advocacy will continue to monitor the Iran Sanctions Act and will keep our members apprised of opportunities to support this legislation.
