Orthodox Union Commends Introduction of Schwartz/McMahon Support Working Parents Act of 2010
Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America (Orthodox Union) commended Representatives Schwartz (D-PA) and McMahon (D-NY) on the introduction of H.R. 5260, the Support Working Parents Act of 2010. This legislation will repeal the current phase-out of the care tax credit so that all parents will receive the full credit of 35 percent of their child care expenses. Under current law, most families are unable to fully realize this tax credit as only parents with a median income of less than $43,000 qualify. The Schwartz/McMahon proposal would eliminate this cap and bring child care costs for a family of two from $1,200 to up to $2,100. This legislation would realize immediate benefits for the cost of summer camp, after school-care and other child care expense for school-age children.
Maury Litwack, Deputy Director of Public Affairs stated:
“The Orthodox community struggles with the high cost of tuition and every dollar that goes back to the home is invaluable. We welcome the introduction of this fiscally friendly family proposal and look forward to swift passage, We thank Reps. Schwartz and McMahon for their leadership on this issue.”
