Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
I am writing today to ask that you ensure that the Senate expands economic assistance and eligibility for the charitable sector in the next round of coronavirus relief legislation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly increased the need for charitable organizations to provide additional services to our communities. Especially now, America’s nonprofit charities are frontline responders providing food, shelter, medical services and other critical services to those in need in their communities. At the same time, we know that the economic downturn will dramatically reduce donor contributions and other sources of revenue on which nonprofit charities rely to survive.
Without significant and immediate financial assistance from the federal government, America’s charitable nonprofit and the people we serve will be forces to cut services – or even cease operations – at a time when our efforts are needed by the most vulnerable in our communities.
Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Angus King (I-Maine) are circulating a letter in the U.S. Senate to request that Leaders Mitch McConnell and Charles Schumer ensure future legislation includes provisions that expand assistance so that Jewish communal organizations and other nonprofits can get the relief they need to survive and help others amid the COVID-19 crisis. The letter specifically requests the inclusion of the following provisions in the next relief package:
- Expanding eligibility for nonprofits to participate in the Paycheck Protection Program by modifying the current 500-employee cap or by other means;
- Adjusting the Economic Stabilization Fund or other mechanisms to implement programs to support nonprofit employers with between 500 and 10,000 employees;
- Providing clear guidance and maximum flexibility to private lenders to prioritize processing the applications of charitable nonprofits.
The deadline to sign the letter is COB Monday, May 4.
We are grateful to the Senate for passing the first wave of emergency relief via the CARES Act; as you consider additional legislation for relief, please stand with America’s nonprofit charities so that they may continue to provide frontline services.
Sincerely,
