Dear Recipient's Title and Name:
The recent and unprecedented surge in attacks on the American Jewish community is deeply disturbing. While anti-Semitism is an ancient hatred, this wave of assaults demands a clear and immediate response from our nation’s elected leaders.
During the past year alone, 2,024 anti-Semitic incidents in the United States ranging from harassment to vandalism and assault were recorded — a mere 4 percent decrease from the all-time high of 2019. Far from dissipating during the COVID pandemic, the assaults continued, often shifting online. The FBI’s most recent hate crimes report affirms these findings and notes that Jews remain by far the religious group most targeted for hate crimes, comprising 60 percent of them.
On behalf of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America—the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization—I am writing to respectfully ask you vote for a resolution introduced by Sens. Jacky Rosen and James Lankford condemning this recent rise in anti-Semitism (S. Res. 252), formally titled “A resolution unequivocally condemning the recent rise in anti-Semitic violence and harassment targeting Jewish Americans, and standing in solidarity with those affected by anti-Semitism.”
In addition to calling on our elected officials and faith and civil society leaders to denounce and combat all manifestations of anti-Semitism, the resolution also urges President Biden to take specific actions to address anti-Semitism. These include:
• nominating an ambassador to monitor and combat anti-Semitism;
• engaging international organizations to combat anti-Semitism;
• advancing Holocaust education through the Never Again Education Act;
• producing a report on the U.S. threat level of anti-Semitism;
• allocating greater resources for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which provides funding for day schools, synagogues and other houses of worship and nonprofits to improve their security.
This resolution is a very important step in pushing back against those spreading hate against Jews in the United States. So far, 72 Senators – evenly divided among Democrats and Republicans – have co-sponsored this bill. We ask you now to stand with your colleagues and our country’s Jewish community, and against anti-Semitism, by voting for this resolution.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
